About Richard

Richard Hornby is an experienced Mathematics and Physics tutor, teacher and examiner based in Durham.

He founded Mallard Days Educational Services to provide individual, specialist educational support built around the needs of each student.

Academic background

Richard studied Physics and Astronomy at Durham University, graduating with an MSci in Physics & Astronomy in 2008, before completing a PGCE in 2010.

He has subsequently worked across teaching, private tuition, assessment and educational consultancy.

Tuition

Richard has provided private tuition for more than 15 years, working with students with a wide range of abilities and educational goals.

His principal areas are Mathematics and Physics, particularly at GCSE, International GCSE and A level.

Students come to tuition for many different reasons. Some are aiming for the highest possible grades; others have lost confidence or have gaps in their understanding; some simply want the opportunity to explore a subject at greater depth than is possible in the classroom.

Richard’s approach is therefore deliberately individual. Rather than delivering a fixed programme, tuition responds to the student’s existing understanding, current course and longer-term objectives.

Examining and assessment

Richard has worked in external assessment for many years, with experience including examining, question writing, moderation and senior examiner roles across a range of qualifications. This gives him a detailed understanding of assessment, mark schemes and the ways in which students can communicate their scientific and mathematical understanding effectively.

Examining experience informs Richard’s tuition, particularly when helping students develop examination technique, but tuition remains focused first and foremost on developing secure understanding of the subject.

Beyond tuition

Alongside tuition and examining, Richard has been involved in science communication and educational activities over many years, including work with the Institute of Physics, public engagement, talks and workshops. Mallard Days has supported students, families, schools and other educational organisations through a range of projects since its establishment.

Richard holds an Enhanced DBS certificate and undertakes regular safeguarding training.

In the community

Outside education, Richard has a longstanding involvement in community and voluntary work in Durham. He is an elected member and current Chair of Belmont Parish Council and has been involved in a range of local community projects and organisations. Richard retains a keen interest in astronomy – and much of the rest of his spare time is spent with his family, including two rather energetic golden retrievers.
