Mallard Days provides specialist one-to-one tuition in Mathematics and Physics, individually planned around each student’s needs, course and goals.
Tuition is provided by Richard Hornby, an experienced private tutor, teacher and examiner, and is now principally delivered online to students in the UK and internationally.
Subjects and levels
Richard principally provides tuition in Mathematics and Physics, including:
- GCSE and International GCSE Mathematics;
- GCSE and International GCSE Physics and Science;
- A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics;
- A level Physics; and
- selected other UK and international qualifications.
Tuition can be tailored to the student’s particular course, specification and examination board.
If you are unsure whether Richard can support a particular qualification, please include the details when making an enquiry..
Individual tuition
There is no standard Mallard Days programme which every student follows.
Some students need help understanding material they are currently studying at school or college. Others need to revisit earlier topics, develop their confidence, improve their problem-solving or prepare intensively for examinations.
Sessions are therefore planned around the individual student and can change as their needs develop.
Tuition may include explanation and discussion of difficult concepts, worked examples, problem solving, examination questions, review of school or college work, and identifying and addressing gaps in earlier knowledge.
The aim is not simply to complete more questions or memorise methods, but to help students develop the understanding and confidence needed to tackle unfamiliar problems increasingly independently.
Online tuition
Regular one-to-one tuition is principally provided online.
Online sessions allow us to work directly with written mathematics, diagrams, graphs, examination questions and other resources while avoiding the time and geographical limitations of travelling to lessons.
Students receive the information needed to join each session in advance. A computer or suitable tablet with a reliable internet connection, microphone and appropriate workspace is normally all that is required.
Examination preparation
Richard has extensive experience of examining and assessment alongside his tuition work.
This experience informs examination preparation, particularly in helping students interpret questions, communicate mathematical and scientific reasoning clearly, apply their knowledge in unfamiliar situations and recognise where marks are being lost.
Effective examination preparation is not simply about learning mark schemes. Secure subject knowledge comes first, followed by plenty of experience applying that knowledge to appropriate examination questions.
As examinations approach, sessions can place greater emphasis on past-paper questions, examination technique, timing and identifying the areas where further work will have the greatest benefit.
Between sessions
Where appropriate, Richard may recommend questions, resources or areas for independent study between sessions.
The amount will depend on the student’s circumstances and existing workload. The purpose is to reinforce work covered during tuition and encourage students to become increasingly confident independent learners, rather than simply adding another large quantity of homework.
Current availability
Richard is currently at capacity for regular one-to-one tuition.
You are still welcome to enquire about future availability. Providing information about the student’s subjects, qualification, year group and general availability will make it easier to identify whether a suitable session may become available.
If you need tuition sooner, Mallard Days also provides information about independent tutors and specialist tuition services which may be able to help.
Fees and arrangements
Regular one-to-one tuition is charged at £40 per hour.
Sessions are invoiced monthly in advance, with payment normally due by the 5th of each month.
Details of cancellations, rearrangements and other practical arrangements are set out in my terms and conditions
If a regular tuition place becomes available, session timing and other arrangements will be agreed before tuition begins.
