The government has announced changes to the exams in 2021. We will continue to work with our tutees to make sure that they are ready for their examination, whenever they take place, and in whatever form they end up being. In summary, the updates are as follows: The main exam series will start on 7 June 2021 and end on 2 July 2021. One maths and one English GCSE exam will take place before the May half-term. Although talks will take place between now and the date of the strike, we are aware that many residents in our area use Arriva buses (particularly the 64, 22 and 24) to go both to work and in to the city. - [Roadworks and delays](https://mallard-days.com/blog/2016/04/14/roadworks-and-delays/): As you may or may not be aware, there are currently roadworks taking place on Gilesgate Roundabout and Leazes Bowl Roundabout in Durham City. This is currently adding around 20 minutes to journey times (in each direction) during the day. Further, for the next three weeks, the road between the two roundabouts will be closed in both directions between 7pm and 6am, which will affect those students in later slots. Pupils from a variety of schools in the area attended a STEM event intended to increase participation in the STEM subjects; and excite and enthuse them to pursue further study or a career in STEM. - [Works on Millburngate Bridge, Durham](https://mallard-days.com/blog/2015/05/07/works-millburngate-bridge-durham/): Work to help plan essential maintenance work on one of Durham’s busiest road bridges is taking place this month (May). Durham County Council will be carrying out investigation works on Milburngate Bridge and drivers are being warned to expect traffic disruption. The work will take place on Sunday 10 and Sunday 17 May between 7am and 7pm. Lane closures will be in place on the bridge between 4am and 9pm on the two days the work will be carried out. This is because, in the main exam season, most students choose to rearrange some (if not all) of their sessions to fit their personal exam timetable.  and it is more efficient to start booking these in on a “clean sheet”. - [Science this week - supernova!](https://mallard-days.com/blog/2014/01/28/science-week-supernova/): Supernova in the Cigar Galaxy As you might have seen, the BBC reported that a supernova – that is, an exploding star – had been observed in M82, the Cigar Galaxy.  Astronomers from all our local astronomical societies have been observing it, although in my opinion, it looks better in photos!  One thing to remember is that the Cigar Galaxy is a very, very long way away… and so that star actually exploded 12 million years ago.  On Earth, this is in the middle of the Miocene epoch, which saw the rise of the apes – a very long time ago indeed! ... - [Science this week - "Wake up, Rosetta!"](https://mallard-days.com/blog/2014/01/20/science-week-rosetta/): Right now, in a control room in Darmstadt, Germany, scientists are waiting to hear from the European Space Agency‘s Rosetta mission.  Rosetta was launched in 2004 from French Guyana, and ever since has been flying on a gravity-assisted course towards the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, which it will orbit and photograph over the next two years, with the mission scheduled to end in December 2015.  Before that, this November, a probe called Philae will be launched towards the surface of the comet. Hopefully the Rosetta mission will tell us a lot more about how comets form and behave, and perhaps even help answer questions ... Read more

It was really cold and breezy on Arthur’s Seat, but I kept going, and even better, managed to to a bit of a sprint finish! I had aimed to finish the race in 30 minutes, but on the big day actually managed to complete the course in 28 minutes and 30 seconds – a whole 4 minutes faster than I have ever run 5k in my life. This year, he ran and collected money for the Prince of Wales’ Hospice in Pontefract, West Yorkshire.  One of our team members’ grandparents was looked after by the Hospice in the months leading up to her death several years ago, and the work that they do in looking after the elderly and infirm is second to none. Recommended calculator for GCSE CASIO FX-85 GTX is the recommended calculator for GCSE Maths this year. Casio have recently issued a new calculator design, -CW, which is replacing the model above. I do not recommend buying this type, as you are more familiar with the older version, and learning a new set of skills this close to an exam is generally a bad idea!
